Fuel filler neck at right rear sid e of vehicle.
The tank flap is locked together with the
doors – see page 37.
Open the tank flap.
Unscrew the fuel filler ca p, remove and
suspend from the tank flap.
The fuel tank has a limiting system which
prevents overfilling of the tank.
Correct filling depends to a large extent on
proper operation of the fuel dispensing
pump:
1. Fully insert the pump nozzle a nd switch it
on.
2. At automatic switch off, the specified
ta nk capac ity is rea che d a fter continued,
measured filling. Leave the filler nozzle in
place until the flow stops.
To close, place fuel filler ca p in p osition and
turn, overcoming the resistance until the
ratchet on the cap engages audib ly.
Close tank flap.
Wipe off any overflow ing fuel immediately.

Catalytic converter for petrol engines
Leaded fuel will damage the catalytic
converter and parts of the electronic
system, rend ering them inoperative.
High quality fuels other than those listed on
pages 144, 212 (e.g. LR P
1)
) could damag e
the catalytic converter.
Damage to the catalytic converter or the
vehicle may result if the follow ing points
are not observed:
z In the event of faulty ignition, uneven
running after cold starting, clear
reduc tion in engine performa nce or
other unusual problems which may point
to a fault in the ignition system, seek
assistance of a workshop as soon as
possible. C ontinue emergency driving for
a short period, m aintaining low speed
and revs.
Irregular engine running and lack of
power w hen the Electronic Stability
Programme (ES
Pl us
3) kicks in are for
operational reasons and can be
ignored see page 148.
z If unburned fuel enters the catalytic
converter, this may result in overheating
and irreparable damage to the catalytic
converter.
You should therefore avoid
unnecessarily long use of the starter
when starting-off, running the tank dry
(an irregular fuel supply will lead to
overheating) and starting the engine by
pushing or towing.
z If the control indicator Z for ex ha ust
flashes, ease back on the accelerator
until the flashing stops and the control
indicator comes on. Seek the immediate
assistance of a workshop. Control
indicator Z for exhaust – see page 147.
Catalytic converter for dies el engines
Damage to the catalytic converter or the
vehicle may result if the following points
are not observed:
z In the event of uneven running, a clear
reduction in engine performance or
other unusual problems, seek the
assistance of a workshop as soon as
possible. C ontinue emergency driving for
a short period, m aintaining low speed
and revs. 1)
