beyond its resistance point below certain
engine speeds, the transmission downshifts

En gi ne br akin g
To utilize the engine braking ef fec t, select a
lower gear in good time when driving

Braking is most effective in the lowest gear. If

deceleration.
St op pin g the vehicle
The sele ctor lever ca n be le ft in the chosen

When stopping on gradients engage hand
brake or depress brake pedal. To prevent
overh eating of the transmission, do not
increase engine revolutions to ensure smooth
idling while standing if a gear has been
selected.
Switch off engine if stoppin g for a lengthy
period, e.g. in traf fic jams or at level
crossings.
Before lea ving the vehic le, apply hand brak e,
then plac e sele ctor lever in position P and
remove ignition key.
If the ignition key is not removed, the battery
may be discharged if the vehicle is then left to
stand for a lengthy pe riod of time.
The ignition ke y ca n only be removed when
the selector lever is in position P.
Rocking the car
If it becomes necessary to rock the vehicle to
fre e it from sand, mud, snow or a hole , move
the selector lever from D to R in a repe at
pattern while simultaneously applying light
pressure to the a cce le rator pedal. Do n ot race
the engine and a void sudden ac celeration.
This applies only to the exceptional
circumstances mentioned above .
