Notes on loading the vehicle
z Heavy objects in the luggage compa rtment
should be placed as far forward as possible
aga in st the rear se at ba ckrests or, if the
rea r seat backrests are folded down,
against the front seat backrests. If objects
are to be stacked, the he avier objects
should be plac ed a t the bottom. Unse cured
objects in the luggage compartment would
be thrown forward with great force in the
event of hea vy brak in g, for example.
z Secure heavy objects with lashing straps 3
attached to la shing eyes – see page 69.
If h eavy loads slip when the vehicle is
braked heavily or driven arou nd a be nd, the
handling of the vehicle may change.
z Saloon: Loose objects in the luggage
compartment shou ld be secured against
slipping using a luggage net – see page 69.
z Est ate : Always fit t he safety net wh en
transporting objects in the luggage
compartment; see page 73.
z If objects are be ing tran sported in the
luggage compartment, the rear seat
back re sts mu st be locke d in place 3 (red
marking on the slide catch on top of the
backrest no longer visible); see
pag es 6 8, 71.
z Do not allow the load to protrude above the
upper edge of the rear seat backrests, or
above the upper edge of the front seat
back re sts if the rear se at backrests are
folded down.
z The warning triangle 3 and first-aid kit 3
must always be free ly acc essible.
z Do not place a ny objects in front of the rear
window or on the instrument pane l. T hey
are refle cted in the glass, obstruct the
driver's view and will be thrown through the
vehicle , for instanc e in the event of he avy
br ak in g.
z No obje cts must be placed in the a rea in
which the a irbags infla te, as the y could
cau se in ju ry wh en th e a irbags a re triggered.
z Bulk y objects should not be transported
with the tailgate/boot lid ope n. Otherwise,
poisonous ex haust f umes cou ld enter the
vehicle . In addition, the number plate is
only clearly distingu ishable and correc tly lit
if the tailgate is closed.
z Weights, payload and roof load – see
pa ge 222.
z Driving with a roof load (see pages 140,
143, 168) increases the sensitivity of the
vehicle to crosswin ds and has a
detrimental effect on vehicle handling due
to the vehicle’ s higher c entre of gravity.
Disregard of these instruction s may le ad t o
injuries or endanger life. Vehicle
passengers must be informed accordingly.
