Driving hints
The first 600 miles/1000 km
Drive your vehicle at various speeds. Do not
use full throttle. Never allow the engine to
labour at low revs.
Make good use of all gears. Depress the
acce lerator pedal a maximum of a round three
quarters of the ava ila ble peda l travel in all
gears.
Do not drive faster than thre e quarters of
ma xi mu m s p eed .
Do not brake unnecessarily hard for the first
125 miles (2 00 km).
The information conce rns the e ngine a nd
parts of the power train, e.g. the final drive.
Never coast with engine not running
Many units will not function in this situation
(e.g. brake se rvo u nit , power st eering ). Driving
in this manner is a da nger to yourself and
ot her s.
Brake servo unit
With th e e ng ine no t r unnin g t he b rak e ser vo
unit is no longer ef fective onc e the brake
peda l has been depressed once or twice. The
braking effect is not reduced but substantially
greater foot pressure is nece ssary t o stop the
vehicle.
Power steering
If the power steering should fail – e.g. when
the vehicle is being towed with the engine
switched off – the vehicle can still be steered
but considerably greater eff ort is n ec essary.
Driving in mountainous terrain or with
caravan/trailer
The cooling fan is driven electrica lly. Its
cooling capa city is thus not dependen t on the
engin e spee d. At high engine spee ds a lot of
heat is produce d and a t low engine speeds
correspondingly less heat is produced.
For this reason, when driving uphill do not
shift down into a lower gear when ever the
vehicle c an still climb the hill in t he higher
gear.
Diesel engine: O n gra dients of 8 % or more,
do not drive faster than 20 mph (30 km/h) in
first gea r or 30 mph (50 km/h) in second gear.
Driving with a roof load
Do not exceed the permissible roof load; see
pages 168, 222. For reasons of safety,
distribu te the load eve nly and secure it
properly with re taining stra ps so that it can not
slip. Set the tyre pressure to the value
spec ifie d for a full load. Do not drive f aster
than 75 mph (12 0 km/h). Check an d retigh ten
the straps frequ ently.
